The Woodlands Trust for Historic Preservation

Organizational Overview Founded in 1996, The Woodlands Trust for Historic Preservation is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of area residents and visitors by serving as a hub for activities and educational programs that interpret, celebrate, and make available to the public The Woodlandsí historic buildings and tranquil green space. The Woodlands 54-acre landscape is at once a one-of-a-kind 18th-century English pleasure garden, 19th-century rural cemetery, and a modern green oasis for its neighbors in bustling University City and West Philadelphia. The Woodlands was designated a National Historic Landmark District in recognition of its unique history and rich resources. Actively used today, the cemetery, historic buildings, landscape and programs are resources for schools, community residents, university students, as well as for scholars seeking a further understanding of American architectural and botanical history, urban development, and the origin and growth of West Philadelphia. The Woodlands is in a period of growth, and is being guided by a 10-year Master Plan. Goals of the plan include increasing visibility and access, restoring the historic buildings and landscape, expanding the use of the 54-acre grounds, and opening new opportunities for revenue. Since adopting the plan in 2015, the exterior restoration of the Hamilton Mansion and Stable is almost complete, infrastructure upgrades and visitor amenities are funded and in the planning stage, our Grave Gardener volunteer program has begun the re-introduction of Victorian style plantings to the site, archaeological discoveries have given us new insight into the Hamilton-era of the property, and more visitors are coming through our gates daily- to go for a run, walk their dog, or take some time for daily reflection.
