The Cultural Resources Office of INDOT is responsible for ensuring that Federal Highway Administration and INDOT are in compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations - most notably Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4 (f) of the Department of Transportation Act. The office has strong partnerships with state and federal resource agencies, the State Historic Preservation Officer, and historic preservation organizations, ensuring that the project compliance process runs efficiently and on schedule.

This is a full-time position within the Cultural Resource Office of the Environmental Services Division of INDOT. The office is primarily responsible for ensuring that all transportation projects receiving FHWA funding or requiring federal permits are in compliance with Section 106. Under the general direction of the Section Administrator, the historian conducts historic/architecture and historic bridge research and field survey work to determine impact of proposed transportation projects on cultural resources; prepares, reviews and evaluates historic/architecture reports and NEPA environmental documents prepared by outside consulting firms and/or departmental district environmental staff for content and format to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.

 

The ideal candidate must have a graduate degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in American history architectural history and meet Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualification Standards as per 36 CFR Part 61. Specialization and substantial experience in Midwestern history and historical architecture, including fieldwork, analysis and reporting as well as some familiarity with state and federal preservation and environmental laws is desired.
