Preservation Durham

Overview Join us! Preservation Durham is looking for our next Executive Director to lead our organization and community into a new chapter of continued growth and action. Durham is a preservation town. Our organization works to protect Durham’s unique sense of place by sharing our passion and knowledge. We offer education and advocacy to the public, stakeholders and public officials. We encourage everyone to preserve the places they love and show them how. We collaborate to protect Durham for future generations. As Executive Director, you will be on the front lines of carrying our organization’s mission forward. Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will lead the vision and direction for Preservation Durham; develop and manage our budget, programs, and strategy; and be our ambassador in fostering and building our relationships in the community. Our Mission Preservation Durham’s mission is to protect Durham’s historic assets through action, advocacy and education. As Executive Director, your duties will include:

Financial Performance and Viability: Develop and maintain resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of our organization.

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Preservation Durham, including submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements through collaboration with our Treasurer and Board.
  • Lead initiatives for fundraising and development of the resources necessary to support Preservation Durhams mission, programs and sustained fiscal health, including through building our pipeline of public and private grants and donations. 
  • Responsible for the fiscal management of our operations within its approved budget and maintain a positive financial position.

Mission and Strategy: Work with board, staff and volunteers to ensure that our mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

  • Develop and implement Preservation Durhams programs that carry out the organizations mission, with a strong focus on ensuring the sustainable and scalable future of our Preservation Equity Program.
  • Coordinate with the Board of Director on strategic planning to ensure that Preservation Durham can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
  • Proactively be our ambassador and engage with the community by being actively engaged with other organizations and stakeholders to enhance our membership and presence in Durham.
  • Act as the public spokesperson for Preservation Durham, including through official testimony, public speaking, written and online communication, with input and assistance from Board of Directors as needed.


  • Effectively execute daily operations and administration.
  • Hire, manage and retain competent, qualified staff and volunteers.




Bachelors degree in historic preservation, nonprofit management or a related field (or commensurate experience) 

+5 years experience in senior nonprofit management 

  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Demonstrated success with fundraising and donor relations strategies unique to nonprofit sector
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation

Ability to convey a vision of Preservation Durhams strategic future and motivate staff, board, volunteers and donors

Strong written and oral communication skills

Strong public speaking ability

Transparent and high integrity leadership


The position is full time with a flexible schedule. Evening and weekend time is necessary for events, public hearings and committee meetings. The Executive Director is expected to reside in Durham and participate in the Durham community. 



Our organization offers a salary of $40,000-50,000, commensurate with experience.
