Latino Heritage Program

Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP) engages the next generation of conservation stewards. The program raises awareness of our national parks and historic sites, their accessibility and the need for the Latino community’s involvement in their preservation. Highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students will be selected to work alongside NPS historians, interpreters, archaeologists, architects, and curators on projects in different park units, offices and historical sites throughout the nation.

The Resource Assistant will serve as a member of a team working to prepare the Cultural Landscape Report for Liberty Island. Located in New York Harbor, the island is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and the setting for the Statue. The island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designed a World Heritage Site, one of only twenty-three in the United States. As such, it is a site of deep meaning and inspiration for people across the globe. The design for the island is one of the first examples of the National Park Services efforts to create an appropriate setting for one of its most iconic National Memorials.The Resource Assistant will help provide the park with core baseline documentation needed to guide long-term stewardship of the parks cultural landscape. The Cultural Landscape Report will document the islands historical development, starting with use by Native American tribes, provide narrative and graphic documentation of existing conditions, and analyze the historic significance related to the Statue of Liberty as a designed landscape
