This staff position within the Citys Planning and Community Development Department is in charge of running the City of Great Falls/Cascade County Certified Local Government Historic Preservation Program. In association with this responsibility, the City/County Historic Preservation Officer (HPO) performs the following tasks:





  • Provides staff support and expertise for the Great Falls/Cascade County Historic Preservation Advisory Commission

  • Ensures that the CLG Program maintains its certification with the State of Montana  through quarterly reporting and completion of annual grant responsibilities

  • Upon request, consults with building owners to ensure that historically eligible and surveyed structures are properly modified to maintain historic character,

  • Works with owners and groups of owners to nominate properties and districts for National Register designation

  • Acts as a liaison to both City and County residents to educate them on the importance of historic preservation in both the City and County




A Bachelors degree in history, historic preservation, architecture, planning, or related field is preferred; however, any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major coursework in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience will also be accepted.  A Masters degree may be substituted, in part, for experience. The preferred candidate will ideally possess both technical proficiency in historic preservation as well as the ability to articulate why historic preservation is an essential component of community identity. Must possess/obtain a valid MT drivers license. Grade 41, salary: $38,865.
