The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology promotes the conservation of Indiana's cultural resources through public education efforts, financial incentives including several grant and tax credit programs, and the administration of state and federally mandated legislation. The Division facilitates state and federal preservation programs and is the staff of the State Historic Preservation Officer.

This position provides customer-focused service to agencies, applicants, government officials, and other partners in completing required regulatory reviews, primarily involving transportation and infrastructure projects sponsored by INDOT and FHWA. 

 

 


A day in the life

  • Analyze historical or architectural significance of properties and the effects on historic properties arising from federally or state-funded or federally licensed undertakings and projects. 
  • Draft comment letters regarding the eligibility of properties for the National Register of Historic Places and effects of federal or state projects on eligible properties or those listed in the National Register or Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures. 
  • Consult and negotiate with government officials or their consultants to avoid, lessen, or mitigate adverse effects on historic properties. 
  • Draft or assist in drafting memorandum of agreement documents to lessen or mitigate adverse effects on historic properties. 
  • Represent the division and the State Historic Preservation Officer at meetings and before the Indiana Historic Preservation Review Board. 
  • Respond to technical and procedural questions from government officials, staff members, and the public. 
  • Make site visits or attend meetings outside the office.  From time to time, make presentations at meetings or workshops. 
  • Assist in the training of new staff members and in the maintenance of project review records.

What we're looking for

  • Knowledge and skill acquired through a graduate degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or a closely related field, OR  through a bachelor's degree in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field, plus two years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, federal and state historic preservation statutes, regulations, standards, and criteria.
  • Knowledge of, an ability to apply, the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (36 C.F.R. Part 68) and applicable guidelines.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, construction plans, schematics, topographic maps, and floor plans.
  • Ability to use personal computers for word processing and to access databases.
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve differences between individuals and groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive, working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage time, working well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Ability to respond to technical inquiries from staff, project applicants, other local, state, and federal agencies, consultants, and the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to use SHAARD data base of information on historical, architectural, and archaeological resources in Indiana
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems mapping
  • Preferred experience working with transportation and infrastructure projects in a consulting and/or regulatory role
