Community Preservation Specialist

Indiana Landmarks seeks a full-time Community Preservation Specialist in its Western Regional Office. The Community Preservation Specialist assists the Regional Director in carrying out Indiana Landmarks preservation efforts in western Indiana. Specifically, the Community Preservation specialist will: 

  •  Provide a full range of preservation services for a 17-county region in western Indiana.
  • Provide technical support to historic building owners, community organizations, government officials, local preservation commissions, and other groups and individuals interested in preserving historic structures and sites.
  • Under the guidance of the Regional Director, work with communities to save endangered structures and sites by assisting with advocacy, fundraising, marketing, and other preservation methods.
  • Assist the Regional Director with the creation and growth of local historic preservation organizations; work with existing groups to strengthen their efforts and activities
  • Work with historic preservation commissions in both strengthening and increasing the number of locally protected historic structures and districts.
  • Assist the Regional Director in organizing, developing, and presenting educational programs (presentations, public programs, workshops, etc.) to a variety of audiences throughout the region.
  • The position requires frequent travel, evening meetings, and occasional weekend and overnight responsibilities.


  • Knowledge of historic preservation principles and programs
  • Degree in historic preservation or a degree in a related field with professional preservation experience; Master degree in historic preservation preferred
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven people and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to engage with the public, including regular public speaking
