MHA is seeking a Research and Designation Associate for its Midwest office based in Chicago, IL to prepare and coordinate all aspects of the review and approval process for National Register nominations, local landmark designation reports, and federal and state historic tax credit Part 1 applications. MHA offers a fast-paced and stimulating work environment that is deadline-driven.

The Research and Designation Associate will:

  • Research, prepare, and coordinate preliminary determinations of National Register eligibility, National Register nominations, local landmark designation reports, and federal and state historic tax credit Part 1 applications; 
  • Communicate  and coordinate with clients and federal, state, and local regulators;
  • Supervise interns;
  • Conduct and supervise research at local history repositories; and
  • Make presentations at public meetings.

The successful candidate must have:
  • A Master's degree in historic preservation or a closely related field;
  • minimum of 3 years relevant work experience;
  • Prior work experience in federal, state, and local preservation programs;
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interiors Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History or History  (36 CFR Part 61);
  • Working familiarity with the National Register Criteria for Evaluation;
  • Successful listing of at least one National Register nomination;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • High proficiency in archival and online historical research;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and initiative;
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software;
  • Comfort working with digital images and image software, including Adobe Creative Suite; and
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to travel.
