U.S. Commission of Fine Arts

The Commission of Fine Arts, an independent agency, established in 1910 by Act of Congress, is charged with giving expert advice to the President, Congress, and heads of departments and agencies of the federal and District of Columbia governments on matters of design and aesthetics, as they affect the federal interest and preserve the dignity of the nationís capital. The Commission is supported by a small staff of 12.

Assists the Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and other staff members in matters relating to: architectural design, historic preservation, and history concerning the review of projects submitted to the Commission for review under the Old Georgetown Act and other authorities; the conduct of monthly public meetings; and the fostering of professional contacts concerning projects submitted to the Commission and the Old Georgetown Board. Prepares submission case files, draft reports, and keeps complete and timely records of the Commissions actions.

Assists with the initial reviewing and processing of incoming case materials for the Old Georgetown Act, and other assigned project cases, processing and scheduling of items for review in meetings, and the reporting and recording as required for individual cases.

Reviews concept designs and building permit architectural plans for projects with small and large scopes for residential, commercial and institutional work. Examines incoming submission materials for completeness, legibility, and accuracy while carefully reviewing proposals for architectural design, historic preservation, civic design, landscape design within contexts that may be historic, monumental, or otherwise specialized.
