The Landmarks Preservation Commission is the New York City agency that is responsible for designating and regulating the city's landmarks and historic districts. These properties have special historic, architectural, cultural, and/or aesthetic significance as part of the heritage of the city, state or nation. The agency consists of eleven Commissioners and a full-time staff. The Landmarks Preservation Commission was established in 1965 when Mayor Robert Wagner signed the local law creating the Commission and giving it its power.

The fellow will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the Commission's work.  Specific responsibilities may vary, but the fellow will primarily support the work of the Preservation Department. In particular, the fellow will be assigned tasks related to producing an updated Permit Application Guide, which will explain LPCs proposed rules and offer instructions on how to file a complete application that includes all of the required materials. Working under the guidance of preservation staff, the fellow will assist with putting the proposed rules into a user-friendly, graphically rich, format. Through this project the fellow will gain hands-on understanding of LPC Rules and procedures, industry practices, and graphic design development experience, with the nations premier municipal historic preservation agency.
