PROJECT SUMMARY

The Community Development Intern will have an exceptional opportunity to work in the Washington DC Field Office on National Treasure campaigns of the National Trust. The intern will gain direct experience working in a local historic neighborhood to help advance historic preservation goals, engaging directly with residents and stakeholders during a series of community conversations to help identify a resident-generated plan for the preservation of the heritage and historic character of the neighborhood. This internship will put into practice for the intern the National Trusts values of diversity & inclusion, collaboration, and making a difference in a predominantly African-American historic neighborhood, while applying concepts learned during their educational studies. This experience will provide both educational and professional opportunities to interact with residents, city government officials, and community stakeholders, including participating and presenting in public settings. 

National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship. 

For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $2,000 to help offset expenses. The period of the internship would be from approximately June 4, 2018 to July 27, 2018 for approximately 35 hours per week (some flexibility of schedule available); some evenings and weekends will be required.

DUTIES

  • Conduct research analysis and other assignments related to National Treasures, historic neighborhood assessments, and community engagement.
  • Help convene neighborhood-based community discussions for a local Natioal Treasure campaign, assisting in planning, scheduling and conducting group activities.
  • Engage resident stakeholders, city representatives, National Treasure team members, and other key participants.
  • Support a crowdsourced conditions assessment survey of historic buildings in the neighborhood.
  • Compile written report findings from community conversations and work with staff to draft, edit and produce interim and final reports.
  • Participate in meetings and conference calls in support of National Treasure campaigns.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of community development initiatives. 

EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN

The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected preservation and community development professionals, in an educational setting at one of the nations leading arts & cultural and non-profit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered via the National Trust for Historic Preservations Washington Office internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.

Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:

  • Community development approach in convening neighborhood stakeholders to identify a plan and vision for preservation.
  • Community engagement and outreach to community, financial and political stakeholders in support of neighborhood planning and reuse.
  • Research and survey methods for historic buildings conditions assessment.
  • Project focus areas support the preservation of African American historic places. 

At the end of the project, the intern will have produced a written analysis and presentation of best practices of community outreach and engagement of stakeholders, which can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Some experience conducting community outreach and engagement through surveys, community discussions and other interactive methods desired.
  • Familiarity with preservation-based community revitalization and community development a plus, including documenting neighborhood historic and cultural resources and assets and dealing with topics of displacement, ecomonic development, sustainability, and other issues.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills. Confident, outgoing personality and the ability to effectively engage culturally diverse neighborhoods and stakeholders. Connections to African American community groups or organizations a plus; candidates from Historically Black Colleges & Universities encouraged to apply.
  • Experience speaking and presenting effectively in public settings.
  • Flexible schedule with ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed for community conversations.
  • Self-starter and the ability to follow-through on task deliverables.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Good project-organization skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills (especially English/Spanish) a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with other software and social media tools a plus.
  • Bachelors level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in related subject matter preferred, inclduing Community Development, Urban Planning, Political Science, African American Studies, History, or Historic Preservation.
