The City-County Planning Board of Forsyth County and Winston-Salem NC seeks a talented and creative individual for a project planner position focusing on Historic Preservation. Winston-Salem is a vibrant and dynamic community with a rich architectural history. Currently, many of our historic industrial buildings are being revitalized for medical research and education, technology, and urban residential uses.

Responsibilities will include: Forsyth County Historic Resource Commission staff support, Section 106 review and compliance; historic preservation plan and document development including studies of our diverse neighborhoods and populations; intake and processing of certificates of appropriateness; field inspection of properties; and technical assistance to the public. The project planner will work with historic districts and properties including nationally recognized historic districts Old Salem and Historic Bethabara, as well as other properties and districts important to our diverse cultural history. This position will also assist other team members with neighborhood revitalization, housing, downtown planning, and long-range planning.

Position requires:

  • Masters degree in Historic Preservation, Planning, or related field, with three years of experience; or a Bachelors degree with five years of experience.

Knowledge of historic building materials, preservation technology, restoration, rehabilitation, maintenance methods, architectural history, photography, architectural illustration, and principles and practice of urban planning;

Strong writing and presentation skills; computer skills; thoroughness and attention to detail; the ability to work independently and with minimum direction and supervision; and demonstrated people skills in working with property owners, designers, construction personnel, neighborhood groups, staff, and public officials

  • Experience working with the Secretary of Interior Standards and with a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is a plus. The successful candidate will be expected to meet the Secretary of Interior Professional Standards and be approved as a designated Certified Local Government staff person by the NC SHPO within two (2) years of hire.
