Under direction, the City Planner III will be a project manager for Chicago Landmark designations, including research and writing of designation reports, communicating with stakeholders, and guiding the designation project through legally-mandated steps with fixed timelines. The City Planner III will also assist Department of Planning and Development (DPD) staff in evaluation of historic properties; and fulfill section 106 duties as required of a Certified Local Government.



  • Project management of landmark designations, including: guiding the project through legally mandated steps with fixed timelines, communication with stakeholders, mailings, and conducting public meetings
  • Researches topics in architectural history and City of Chicago history using archives, libraries, and online sources
  • Writes about architecture and architectural history, including: building and area descriptions, historic types and styles of architecture, important architects and engineers, historic contexts, and patterns of historic urban development
  • Writes about broad aspects of history including: aspects of social, economic, and cultural history; narration of historic events, historic biography
  • Makes presentations at both internal and public meetings, including to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and City Council Committee
  • Conducts surveys and evaluates historic districts or historic building types
  • Evaluated physical integrity and alterations to buildings using knowledge of historic building materials, assemblies, and methods of construction
  • Represents the City of Chicago as a consulting party in Section 106 reviews in complex undertakings
  • Performs routine Section 106 reviews where Programmatic Agreements are in place
  • Responds to general inquiries from the public by phone and email
  • Hires, trains, and supervises interns

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning, or a directly related field, plus two years of planning work experience
