VHBs Environmental Resources Group is seeking a full-time preservation planner to work with our expanding cultural resources group. Key responsibilities include the preparation of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation, planning, and land development projects and state and federal historic tax credit projects.  


  • Conduct and manage cultural resource identification and evaluation surveys for public and private sector clients
  • Develop scopes of work and fee estimate and negotiate contracts with clients
  • Manage projects and provide technical fulfillment on cultural resource components of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation and land development projects. Likely tasks will include identification and      evaluation of historic properties, assessment of project-related impacts, and technical writing
  • Coordinate Section 106 and other applicable federal, state, and local historic preservation reviews for transportation and land development projects, including identification and evaluation of historic properties; assessment of project-related impacts; and preparation of process documentation. Assist Practice Area Leader in consultation and negotiation with SHPOs, government officials, and consulting parties
  • Prepare historic tax credit applications for submittal to state and federal review agencies
  • Support other VHB departments and regional offices with historic preservation planning, site history research, and compliance services
  • Assist Director of Cultural Resources in scoping, managing, and tracking projects and proposals and in marketing group services within and outside VHB

  • Able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage projects as delegated by project lead
  • Strong communication skills including writing skills and the ability to work closely with clients 


  • BA/BS degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation Planning, or closely-related discipline (MA/MS is preferred)
  • 10+ years of professional environmental/preservation planning experience
  • Ability to independently prepare scopes of work and fee estimate
  • Excellent communication skills for client management and team leadership
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interiors professional qualifications
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and photographic abilities
  • Experience with building research, and knowledge of architectural styles, forms, and periods of development
  • Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of New England
  • An understanding of, and experience with, application of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
  • Fluency in reading architectural drawings
  • Experience with federal and state cultural resource management with a working command of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation statutes and regulations, including Section 106 and National Register criteria is required
  • Experience with Chapter 254, MEPA, and NEPA are a plus
