The Cultural Resources Office of INDOT is responsible for ensuring that Federal Highway Administration and INDOT are in compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations - most notably Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act. The office has strong partnerships with state and federal resource agencies, the State Historic Preservation Officer, and historic preservation organizations, ensuring that the project compliance process runs efficiently and on schedule.

This is a full-time Archaeologist (Environmental Manager 2) position within the Cultural Resource Office of the Environmental Services Division of INDOT. The office is primarily responsible for ensuring that all transportation projects receiving FHWA funding or requiring federal permits comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act. The successful candidate must conduct research and field reconnaissance to determine impact of proposed transportation projects on cultural resources; prepare, review and evaluate archaeological reports and NEPA environmental documents prepared by outside consulting firms and/or departmental district environmental staff for content and format to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements.


The ideal candidate must have a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field and meet Secretary of Interior's Professional Qualification Standards as per 36 CFR Part 61 and State of Indiana's qualifications for Principal Investigator (312 IAC 21-3-4). They must also have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources. Experience in Midwestern archaeology, including fieldwork and laboratory methods and techniques desired.
