Job Summary:

The Associate Manager, Content Development reports to the Associate Director of Publications and Programs and will work closely with key program staff across the Preservation Division. The Associate Manager will lead content development, and help manage campaigns that share division research outcomes, best practices, lessons learned, and new preservation approaches and tools with traditional and non-traditional audiences.  The Associate Manager will work in collaboration with the overall Preservation Division, the National Trusts Public Affairs and Marketing teams, and external organizations and individuals.


  • In partnership with the Associate Director and Director of Publications & Programs, work with colleagues across the Preservation Division to identify, research, write/create, and produce digital content that demonstrates the impacts of the National Trusts work.
    • Work with the Preservation Division Management Team (PDMT) to identify priority campaigns for each department and establish an agreed upon schedule for promotion.
    • Collaborate with other teams in the Preservation Division (Government Relations, Historic Sites, Research & Policy Lab, Field Services) to achieve organizational goals regarding engagement through content.
    • Work with content teams across the Trust to ensure cross platform storytelling.
    • Content includes but is not limited to digital stories, video and audio material on a variety of different platforms.
  • Incorporate dissemination efforts into all NTHP outreach platforms.
  • Help to identify new audiences for content and best ways to reach them 


  • At least 3-5 years professional level experience, including solid background in content development and social media
  • Experience and understanding of storytelling fundamentals
  • Strong writing and interviewing skills; strong verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively
  • Excellent research and communication skills, including good listening techniques; a clear, concise writing style. Strong knowledge of AP Style and grammar.
  • Knowledge of historic preservation and current practices in the field prefered.
  • Previous experience with blogging platforms, social media, and/or CMS platforms preferred. Previous experience with multimedia production (filming, editing, coding, etc.) preferred.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization.
  • Intermediate project-management skills, including project budgeting and planning. Ability to prioritize and achieve results with moderate supervision.
  • Experience successfully managing internal stakeholders and relationships.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across divisions to implement processes and achieve results. Track record of building and maintaining productive relationships with multiple stakeholders. Public contact and ability to work successfully in close proximity to others required.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently and respond to a high volume of ongoing requests in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a dynamic work environment. Ability to work effectively with frequent interruptions required. Able to handle frequently changing and/or unscheduled tasks with accuracy. 
  • Proven ability to continually develop skills related to use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and skill set essential.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging culturally diverse audiences and partners. Bi-lingual language skills (especially English/Spanish) a plus. 
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent years of experience) required. Advanced degree in communications, journalism or related field highly preferred.
  • Some travel may be required.
