Pasadena Heritage, the second largest nonprofit historic preservation organization in California and founded in 1977, is currently seeking applicants for the position of Preservation Director.
The Preservation Director is responsible for overseeing the organizations advocacy efforts and historic preservation easement program. The easement program currently protects more than 80 historic buildings in Pasadena and neighboring communities, and responsibilities include annual inspections, review of proposed projects, and recruitment of new easement contracts. The Preservation Director also works closely with the Executive Director, Advocacy Committee, and Board of Directors to identify and respond to threats to historic resources in Pasadena. This may involve monitoring and preparing comments on projects under review by the City, working with developers and property owners to influence projects impacting historic resources, preparing local landmark and National Register nominations, providing technical advice and assistance to owners of historic properties, and organizing and implementing various educational events and initiatives. Moreover, the Preservation Director is responsible for preparing newsletter articles and regularly presenting reports to the Advocacy Committee and Board of Directors.
The ideal candidate will hold a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation or a related field and have two years work experience in historic preservation; candidates with a Bachelors Degree and relevant experience will also be considered. Familiarity with historic building styles and materials, accepted preservation practices and resources, including the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Restoration and Rehabilitation, city planning procedures, and preservation easements is highly preferable. Excellent writing, organization, and communication skills are a must.
This is a full-time position with benefits, which will go into effect after a specified period, including paid health insurance and paid vacation. Evening and weekend hours are sometimes required. The starting salary is commensurate with experience.
