Our goal is to guide the development of the City in a manner that enhances quality of life, promotes distinctive neighborhoods, supports businesses and protects the environment through professional, positive, solution-oriented planning, permitting, zoning, and enforcement services. The Planning Division facilitates and implements long and short-range plans for the City, its business districts, corridors, and neighborhoods. This division also provides staff support to the Planning Commission and the Design/Development Review Commission which includes historic preservation and urban design.

The City of Columbia is looking for an energetic, professional individual interested in working in a vibrant, growing Southern city for the position of Planner with a specialty in historic preservation. The purpose of this position is to perform professional planning work in the administration and enforcement of design guidelines for City historic and design districts. This will include reviewing applications for rehabilitating or altering properties in historic districts, researching buildings, writing professional reports on projects, making presentations at various public meetings, and assisting property owners, architects, and developers. Applicant must be able to provide accurate, up-to-date historic preservation technical assistance to property owners. Professional architectural survey experience a plus. Applicant must also assist in the development of long-range plans for the City, and to perform related work as assigned. Strong customer service skills required.
