- Masters degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field.
- One (1) year Archaeological fieldwork experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This is a full-time position with the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, located in Tallahassee. The archaeologist will work with property owners, consultants, government officials, and other members of the public to evaluate archaeological sites and associated properties for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and to research, write, and revise nominations for listing in the National Register. Other responsibilities include training, reviewing grant projects, outreach, and travel.
Review Preliminary Site Information Questionnaires, Cultural Resource Assessment Surveys, and Master Site File Forms to determine eligibility for listing in the National Register (NR). Research, write, edit and evaluate NR nomination proposals in collaboration with the public, consultants, and other Bureau of Historic Preservation staff. Participate in NR Review Board meetings by preparing materials, writing staff comments, answering questions, and incorporating board member comments and edits into nomination proposals. Conduct site visits and evaluations when possible, including taking high-quality photographs that meet National Park Service requirements for NR nominations. Prepare maps and site plans for NR nominations. Provide NR program information in response to public inquiries.
Participate in Historic Sites Survey by recommending survey projects, monitoring projects, reviewing and evaluating submitted surveys via written reports and commentaries, and providing technical assistance to surveyors. Develop Historic contexts/Multiple Property Documentation Forms for Florida properties for use with surveys and NR nominations.
Assist other Bureau Activities: Conduct determinations of eligibility for the NR as a result of Section 106, Federal Historic Preservation Tax Credits, and other related programs. Provide technical assistance and detailed NR information to other BHP and DHR sections.
Perform other work related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the NR Criteria for Evaluation and NR process.
- Knowledge of archaeological and historic field survey methods.
- Knowledge of ArcGIS software.
- Research, writing, and editing skills in preparing NR nominations.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate archaeological sites for significance and integrity.
- General knowledge of historic preservation laws and practice.
- Knowledge of Chapter 1A-46, FAC.
