The Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs (DCHA) creates and maintains a flourishing cultural landscape throughout Passaic County. As the designated proponent for the County’s heritage and the agent for arts and history programming, the DCHA is responsible for developing, promoting, and implementing an extensive public programs calendar and heritage tourism campaign to encourage public awareness and visitation to the County’s various historic sites. Included in these sites are the Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters, Hamilton House Museum, Lambert Tower, Lambert Castle, Passaic County Arts Center at the John W. Rea House, Westervelt-Vanderhoef House, Passaic County Court House, Passaic County Court House Annex, Goffle Brook Park, and Garret Mountain Reservation. Through this ongoing endeavor, the DCHA maintains these sites for Passaic County residents and visitors to enjoy today, and will ensure that these sites are preserved for the benefit of future generations.

JOB TITLE:                      Museum Attendant




SALARY / HOURS:            $40,000 / Full-time




SCHEDULE:              Wednesday Sunday/ 9:00am 5:00pm




JOB DESCRIPTION:  Under the direction of the Director of the Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs and Museum Curator, the primary function of this position is to assist in the planning and execution of daily museum functions; including but not limited to exhibit installations, preservation of existing collections, guiding visitors and performing clerical and other museum-related duties as required and/or assigned.








·         Welcomes visitors and responds to questions about the history of the site and its programming;


·         Provides tours of the museum, buildings, and grounds to school and bus groups and engages the public with American, military, material, and cultural histories;


·         Help prepare museum exhibits and collections for public display;


·         Catalogue and conduct inventories of collections (including photographing and researching objects);


·         Research various topics as needed to fulfill programmatic and collection requirements


·         Assist in the implementation of grant funded projects;


·         Plans, organizes, and implements special events and exhibits at the historic site;


·         Manage daily operations of the historic site;


·         May need to schedule, train, and assign work to seasonal staff, and volunteers, to meet business needs;


·         Conducts daily checks of property and museum space;


·         Conducts off-site programming and presentations as needed;


·         Develops, plans, and organizes promotional material for activities and events in conjunction with local community organizations, the media, and the Countys Division of Tourism Coordinator;


·         Assists visitors with gift shop purchases and maintains inventory levels;


·         Balances cash register receipts and makes daily deposit; and


·         Compiles data on attendance and visitor experience and submits reports to leadership team.








·         Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, art history, museum studies, or related field;


·         Previous experience in museums, cultural programs, art spaces, etc. are preferred but not required;
