Indiana Department of Transportationís (INDOT) Cultural Resources Office is responsible for ensuring that all federal aid transportation projects in Indiana are in compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations - most notably Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4 (f) of the Department of Transportation Act. The Cultural Resources office conducts archaeological and historical investigations, reviews of consultant prepared cultural resource reports, Section 106 guidance, state historic preservation policy and review, and provides assistance with accidental discoveries of cultural resources during construction. The office has strong partnerships with state and federal resource agencies, the State Historic Preservation Officer, and historic preservation organizations, ensuring that the project compliance process runs efficiently and on schedule.

This position will serve as an Archaeology Intern for the Cultural Resources Office within the Environmental Services Division of INDOT.†The Intern will be responsible for completion of Archaeology Reports and fieldwork. The intern will be assigned specific projects and work assignments. Work and recommendations will be made to the supervisor.† Projects may include:

The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support including, but not limited to the following:†

  • Assisting with research and writing related to the preparation of archaeological reports and documents
  • Conducting records searches for small projects
  • Assisting with fieldwork and laboratory work as well as data entry
  • Development of GIS layers related to archaeological sites
  • Participation in cross training opportunities within Environmental Services Division
  • Other duties as assigned

Interested applicants must be currently working towards a Graduate or Bachelors degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant experience and previous exposure to GIS, database management, and archaeological course work and field experience in the Midwest region.

The Governors Public Service Summer Internship is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governors Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
