Each summer, more than 23,000 scouts travel from all corners of the US and abroad to participate in the rich backcountry program and trekking opportunities available at Philmont Scout Ranch. 35 staffed backcountry camps scattered throughout the 140,171-acre facility provide assorted programs ranging from rock climbing to horseback riding to mine tours and living history. Since 1939, Philmont programs have attracted more than 1 million participants. The Philmont property also serves as the national training center for the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont employs approximately 80 full-time employees to help operations continue year-round and supervise the more than 1,100 seasonal staff members. Openings for positions will be posted below. Position: Museum Assistant/Villa Philmonté Curator

Philmont Scout Ranch is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as Villa Philmonté Curator who will provide leadership and management of the Villa Philmonté historic structure, interpretive tour program, seasonal staff and the immediate grounds surrounding that estate.

Job Overview
The Villa Curator functions as the leading expert of Waite and Genevieve Phillips and is responsible for sharing their legacy with over 19,000 people each year. The position has direct responsibility for hiring, scheduling and supervising 8 seasonal staff which support the operations of the Villa Philmonté and the National Scouting Museums. The Villa Philmonté Curator reports to the Director of Museums.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain expert knowledge of the life of Waite and Genevieve Phillips, to include ongoing research about the Villa Philmonté, Philmont Ranch, and the Phillips family.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Villa Philmonté as a part of the museums program at Philmont Scout Ranch.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and oversight of maintenance, restoration, and fundraising programs for the Villa Philmonté, Guest House, and Villa Gardens.
  • Manage the Villa collection and archives using current museum standards and best practices.
  • Develop and manage Villa tours during the summer and second seasons.
  • Select, train and supervise seasonal Villa staff and year-round volunteers.
  • Monitor and evaluate the Villa tour program throughout the seasons to ensure high quality and consistency.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate second-season tours of the Villa when appropriate.
  • Develop exhibits that share the story of the Villa Philmonté, Philmont Ranch, and Phillips Family.
  • Directly support the garden programs at the Villa Philmonté and Historic Chase Ranch, through design, planting, and management of Villa gardening staff.
  • Assist the Museums Director with Historic Chase Ranch Museum operations including tour programs, inventory and archive efforts, and creating activities to engage visitors and guests.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Previous museum experience desired
  • Previous historical interpretive experience desired
  • Previous curatorial experience with historical structures desired
  • Knowledge of museum best practices
  • Experience with public speaking
  • A valid drivers license and a clean driving record is required
  • Must be able to pass a BSA background check
  • Secondary education with a focus on American History or Museum Studies is preferred, but not required

Compensation
The National Council, Boy Scouts of America is an equal opportunity employer. This is a 40-hour week, non-exempt hourly position $34k to $39k (commensurate with experience), with potential for overtime during busy seasons. The BSA offers benefits to include major medical, prescription coverage, dental, vision, life-insurance, short and long-term disability, accidental death, and a retirement plan. We also offer generous PTO and 11 holiday observances.
