Technology & Heritage Conservation
At Carletons 2012 Heritage Symposium, we tackled questions about the heritage movement's messages and messengers. We talked about social media, built heritage, new perspectives, and student projects based on values-based conservation. This year, we urge participants to explore the marriage - or, perhaps, the courtship - of technology and heritage, and delve deeper into the issues involved. We ask you, members of the extended heritage community to tell us your stories. We want to hear about your experiences working with technology, in all its many forms.
Building off of last years conversations, how has technology impacted the communication of the heritage movements messages? Have the messages changed? Have the messengers changed? Has technology changed the fields of heritage and heritage conservation? Has it hindered your work? Has it enriched your work? And what about the conservation of technology itself - are there unique difficulties or challenges? We encourage you to think beyond digital technology and take it back to the basics. Does the technology of the 20th and 21st centuries change the way you can, should, or could, work within your role as a member of the heritage conservation community? Has technology changed who is or isnt a member of that community or enabled the field to grow, or merely limited its participants in new and different ways?
We invite submissions exploring all aspects of the heritage - technology relationship for either traditional papers (15-20 minutes) or poster presentations. We propose hosting both traditional (panel) and paperless poster sessions. If you are interested in the paperless poster session please include a note about this with your submission, or contact us as soon as possible so we can make the necessary arrangements.
The deadline for submitting the abstracts (up to 250 words) is January 1st, 2013. Selected panelists will be informed by February 1st, 2013. We welcome submissions from all levels of study, work and experience. (Participation from students, young professionals and allied fields is encouraged.)
Please include with your submission: title and format of presentation, names and and brief CV(s) of all contributors, telephone number and e-mail of contact person and name of presenting person(s). Abstracts should be submitted by email attachment (MS Word, double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font) with "CALL FOR PAPERS - Heritage Symposium 2013" in the subject line to: thinkheritage [at]gmail.com
The symposium will be held on March 16th, 2013 at the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre, Ottawa, ON. The conference will be preceded by a charette where students will have the opportunity to discuss with their peers the relationship between heritage conservation and technology. We look forward to sharing the results of the charrette with you during a special session at the symposium. A separate call for applications will be issued for the charette.
