At the 2009 Kansas State Conference, there were two round table discussions about planning for the future of preservation in Kansas and preservation advocacy. The Kansas State Historical Society (SHPO) has limited advocacy ability. We as Kansas preservationists need to organize and advocate for preservation through local preservation groups and through Kansas Preservation Alliance (www.kpalliance.org). In order to continue the discussion about building a preservation ethic and getting the community involved in preservation (and vice versa) a Facebook group has been created. It is open to all who are interested in the preservation of Kansas's unique cultural and historic resources: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=89086078417
Also, Kansas State Historical Society has developed a listserv so that people interested in Kansas preservation issues can stay in touch and discuss what is going on in the preservation community. Please join Preserving Kansas: http://groups.google.com/group/preserving-kansas?hl=en |

It seems that preservationists are fighting an up-hill battle lately, and it is getting steeper. In Kansas, legislation is being proposed that would, if passed, eliminate the environs review that offers historic sites some protection. Other legislation threatens land uses, including those on historic properties, near military installations. Recently the Kansas legislature put a cap on rehabilitation tax credits. We have armed ourselves recently, however, with forums like this, blogs, and now a Kansas website to keep informed and sound an alert when necessary. We publish Kansas of Olde, www.kansasofolde.com. It is a collaborative site. We hope you like it.
Thanks for this forum. We will be posting on our site the info I found here about the certification program for historic technologies, as soon as we get the verifcaiton and permission. (We run our site according to old-fashioned journalistic standards.) Many of our subscribers and visitors have mentioned a need for just such a program... wish it were in Kansas.
